Actually, buffalo hunting was mostly about freeing the range for the settlers to farm and feed their animals, for the railroads to have free access, for the pelts and to take away the Indians' main food source. And it worked.

Most Indian tribes didn't care about virginity so much, not being a maiden usually just meant she's not young and single anymore.

Trial by combat isn't a 70's thing but an ancient belief that the gods and/or spirits will help out the justified in combat. Not sure if the Native Americans actually had such a policy. Usually they had the elders or the whole tribe rule on disagreements.
